Define: Hot Mess

In the heat of summer, when the music is pumping and the pulse is fast, we don't care if you are a sweaty, sticky, hot mess as long as you're dancing.

n. A spectacular workshop weekend focused on uptempo Lindy and Charleston presented by LaB on July 9th-11th, 2010, in Philadelphia.
Did you hear about HOT MESS? It features two days of classes with Reuel Reis, Joanna Lucero, Karen Turman, and Adam Boehmer. It also has three nights of social dancing with performances by the Loose Marbles (New Orleans, LA), and Glenn Crytzer and his Syncopators (Seattle, WA).
CLASSES will be focused on solo and partnered Lindy Hop and Charleston at faster tempos. Classes will be appropriate for students who are comfortable with Lindy Hop and Charleston basics, and will include material for beginner to advanced dancers. Our instructors will also be offering one additional "masters" class per day, for which students will be selected by audition.

DANCES include Friday night with the Loose Marbles (presented by LAB), Saturday night with the Syncopators (presented by Uptown Swing), Sunday night with our esteemed DJs, and Friday and Saturday late-nights (also DJed).

The Hot Mess Comp

We are extraordinarily excited to present a unique competition at HOT MESS. The HOT MESS COMP will be a solo jazz competition performed in TEAMS. All teams will compete in collaborative solo jazz to a song performed live by THE LOOSE MARBLES.

Based on team performance in the prelims, HOT MESS instructor couples REUEL REIS & JOANNA LUCERO and ADAM BOEHMER & KAREN TURMAN will each select one team TO COLLABORATE WITH in the finals.

THE TWO FINALIST TEAMS will compete in a SOLO JAZZ BATTLE accompanied by the instructor couple who selected them. Teams will receive the competition song ONE HOUR PRIOR to the finals and can use that hour to collaborate, brainstorm, choreograph, and prepare plays.

THE WINNING TEAM will receive a “grab bag” of passes to regional Lindy Hop and solo jazz events (details TBA), including one pass for each member of the team.

RULES AND REQUIREMENTS

  1. HOT MESS COMP teams must consist of 3-5 team members.
  2. All team members must complete their registration for HOT MESS in order to compete.
  3. Each team must pay a $10 entry fee by 7/2/2010. Payment details will be sent upon registration for the comp.
  4. The HOT MESS COMP will be held at Bodek Lounge in west Philadelphia during the HOT MESS event. Prelims will be held on Friday 7/9/2010. Finals will be held at the Saturday Night Fish Fry on 7/10/2010.
  5. Teams are competing for the favor of the instructors, and will be judged on whatever the instructors think is cool. Anything goes, including costumes, choreography, acrobatics and flattery. Team collaboration (as opposed to soloing) is highly encouraged.

TO REGISTER FOR THE HOT MESS COMP:

  1. Form a team of 3-5 members. All team members must be registered for HOT MESS.
  2. Create a team name (eg: ‘Team Philadelphia’, ‘The Hot Messies’, ‘Reuel Reis Fan Club’).
  3. Send an email to carsie(at)lindyandblues(dot)com, with HOT MESS COMP REGISTRATION in the subject line. Include your team name and the names of each team member. You will receive an email response with instructions for payment.
